On January 30, the annual Hockey Day in Canada, 3 on 3 ball hockey tournament in support of “Shoot For a Cure, Spinal Cord Research” took place at Downsview Park.
This year’s event saw a tournament record 118 teams participate across eight different skill levels and was considered to be a success by all parties involved.
A true passion for ball hockey was mandatory at this year’s event as the over 800 participants were forced to brave -17c weather for each of their twenty-five minute games.
“Thankfully, we were on top of things and made sure we all brought toques,” says Exercise Toronto.Com forward Matt Bowie, “It’s a real Canadian day for a great cause.”
After six hard-fought ball hockey games, the ExerciseToronto.Com team was fortunate enough to win gold in the men’s competitive division. Team captain Brendan Black credits hard-work, and solid goaltending as the key to their success, “This was such a well run tournament that offered each division a lot of parity. We had some fortunate bounces in the round-robin games, which really helped us out. But ultimately our goaltending and team-work was the key.”
ExerciseToronto.Com wants to thank the Shoot for a Cure organization, the Ontario Ball Hockey Association, Downsview Park and all the referees and participants for a great day of hockey and entertainment.
The organization and sportsmanship at this year’s event made it an enjoyable day of hockey for all and one that we will be a part of for years to come.
