Lacey O’Sullivan

Name: Lacey O’Sullivan

Team: Ryerson Rams Basketball

Program: Sociology, Year 5

This week’s ExerciseToronto.Com athlete of the week, Lacey O’Sullivan, is one of those rare talents that possesses a natural athletic ability and a passion for her game that demands results.

A starting guard for the Ryerson Rams Basketball team, the OUA’s second place team, O’Sullivan is known for her poise when carrying the basketball and her strong defensive skills without it.

Her combination of offensive and defensive skill is integral to the success of the team explains Rams head coach, Sandy Pothier, “We play a very in your face type game on both offence and defence, and Lacey’s game is the perfect fit for our style as she is full of grit and is tough as nails on both sides of the ball.”

The fact that this fifth-year student stands at 5-4 shouldn’t fool you, because although she might not be the tallest player on the court, she is a proven force who makes a statement with and without the ball.

For instance, last Friday’s match-up against divisional rival, Queens University, saw O’Sullivan tally 12 points, 5 rebounds and 11 assists in 39 minutes of play as Ryerson went onto win 74-60.

The very next night, in a win over Royal Military College, O’Sullivan went a perfect 8-for-8 from the floor en-route to a 19 point performance, but even more impressively finished the game with zero turnovers… Something not easily done when handling the ball on every possession.

These types of performances have become routine for the Port Colborne native, whose talent is seeing her challenge for the OUA lead in steals, a top ten finish in assists per game and defensive player of the year honors.

“Lacey’s contribution to the team has been incredible,” says Coach Pothier.  “She is the type of player who comes prepared and to work hard every day.  She has been a joy to coach and a complete asset to the team,”

On February 13th, O’Sullivan and the Rams will mark the end of their regular season, with a game against York University.  Not only is the match-up important in determining how the post-season will be seeded but the game will also help ramp up preparedness and excitement for the playoffs.

For O’Sullivan, a player who is said to be full of grit and tough as nails, it’s expected that she will be more than ready come game time…

Prepared both mentally and physically to perform her best.

Lacy O’Sullivan, a hard-working, student athlete and a fitting candidate for this week’s ExerciseToronto.Com athlete of the week.
